Boys Roster

Thank you to all the boys who came for evaluations. We had a great turnout, and I can see that many of the boys have been working hard on their skills in the off-season.  Hard decisions needed to be made, so I wanted to provide some context on how or why we place kids on different teams.

One of the big factors in consideration are numbers of kids trying out for a given grade level - if 13 kids are trying out for the competitive league - we can only make one team of 10 and 3 kids will need to be moved to the recreational league. Perhaps all 13 were competitive level in their skill, but 3 will get to be leaders on the recreational team because we can’t make teams of 6 or 7, and a team of 13 would create a situation where the players will not get enough playing time in the season. In most of these situations, we did make attempts to ask some parents of highly skilled kids in the recreational league to move up to competitive league so we could have two teams, but they may have declined the opportunity.

Many boys have been working extremely hard on their skills and training in the off-season, and it shows!  It is hard to see the full picture of competition until you see all of the boys in the gym together. We had between 5-10 nonparent evaluators in each session, led by the high school coaching staff. With such competition, there will undoubtedly be a few people from each grade that feel like they should have been put on a higher level. Your concerns are warranted but I assure you that not only myself, but Canby Junior Basketball board members without players in the grade, and our Canby High School basketball coaches analyzed every angle before constructing these teams to put them in the best position to succeed.

With that, I would like to introduce the CJB 2023-2024 competitive and recreational teams. Coaches will be assigned after interviews and will be in contact once practice schedules are determined.

I am available to answer any questions or concerns - all I ask is that you take the next few days to process the information before firing off an email. I along with all CJB board members are volunteers who also work full time, so please be patient on response times.

Thank you and good luck this season!
